CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Appalachian State's Jason Vitaris kicked a 30-yard field goal in overtime to lift the Mountaineers to a 30-27 victory over The Citadel on Saturday.

Appalachian State's Brian Quick blocked a field goal on the final play of regulation after he caught a 74-yard pass from Armanti Edwards to tie the score at 27 with 4:28 left in the game.

Edwards was 22-for-29 for 327 yards and one touchdown, and also rushed for 80 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries for the Mountaineers (2-2, 2-0 Southern Conference). He became Appalachian State's career passing leader with 7,857 yards, passing Richie Williams, who threw for 7,759 yards from 2002-05.

Van Dyke Jones ran for 81 yards and a touchdown as Citadel (2-2, 0-1) rushed for 214 yards. Bart Blanchard threw for two touchdowns, including a 29-yard pass to Luke Caldwell that gave the Bulldogs a 27-20 lead with 5:18 left.

ASU won the coin toss in overtime and elected to play defense first. The Mountaineer defense capped an up-and-down day when it held The Citadel to five yards on three plays. Sam Keeler, who made 45- and 50-yard field goals earlier, was wide right on his 37-yard attempt and Appalachian took possession.

Cedric Baker began the Mountaineers' overtime possession with a 10-yard run to the 15. From there, the Apps played it safe with three-consecutive carries by Devon Moore that set up Vitaris for the 30-yard game-winner.

Vitaris' kick culminated a game that included two lead changes and two ties.

Defensively, ASU surrendered 373 yards but limited The Citadel's prolific passing attack to only 159 yards, 40 below its season average. Senior All-America receiver Andre Roberts managed 47 yards on six catches.

D.J. Smith led the ASU defense with 10 tackles, Jabari Fletcher added seven tackles, including one-and-a-half for loss and a sack, and Demery Brewer was in on two of the Mountaineers' three sacks.
