College football: Freshman kicker takes care of WCU

SAMFORD 16, WESTERN CAROLINA 3: Cameron Yaw kicked three field goals, including a career-long 47-yarder, and Samford defeated Western Carolina 16-3 on Saturday.

Yaw, a freshman, also had kicks of 35 and 27 yards.

The Bulldogs (3-2, 1-1 Southern Conference) had 163 yards rushing, while holding the Catamounts (0-5, 0-3) to 48.

Zack Jaynes was 12-for-19 with 115 yards and two interceptions for Western Carolina. Jaynes also had 12 carries for 20 yards.

Blake Bostic hit a 44-yard field goal for Catamounts with 5 minutes left in the first half.

GARDNER-WEBB 27, VMI 23: Stan Doolittle threw for 301 yards and one touchdown to lead Gardner-Webb past Virginia Military Institute. The Runnin' Bulldogs (3-1, 1-0 Big South ) took a 27-23 lead on a 3-yard touchdown run by Patrick Hall with 8:33 left to play.

JACKSONVILLE 27, DAVIDSON 21: Josh McGregor threw two touchdowns and rushed for a score for Jacksonville.

The Wildcats (1-3, 1-1) cut the lead to 27-21 on a 7-yard passing score from Matt Heavner to Mark Hanabury with 7:41 remaining.

HOWARD 7, WINSTON-SALEM STATE 3: Willie Carter scored the game's only touchdown and Howard held on to beat Winston-Salem State. Carter, who had seven catches for 116 yards for the Bison (2-2), scored on a 20-yard pass from Willie Haigler in the third quarter. Winston-Salem State (0-5) got on the board with 8:45 remaining on a 45-yard field goal by Landen Thayer.

MARIST 34, CAMPBELL 13: O'Neil Anderson ran for 132 yards and one touchdown and Ryan Dinnebeil added two rushing scores to lead Marist. Daniel Polk scored on runs of 8 and 1 yards for the Camels (1-3, 0-2 PFL).
