Reidsville voters have overwhelmingly approved a $100,000 bond issue for sewerage, sidewalks and an extension of water and lights. The vote was 333 for, 20 against. Total registration was 422.

A pack of about 20 hounds got on the trail of a red fox about a mile southwest of Reidsville and ran him for three-quarters of an hour, until it took refuge under the house of L.L. Trent. The dogs of ex-Sheriff Pinnix and a dog belonging to Mr. Pettigrew then went under the house and made the catch.

September tobacco sales at Rockingham County’s markets: Reidsville, 170,687 pounds; Madison, 75,361 pounds; Stoneville, 16,131 pounds.

Contracts were let at Wentworth for five more school buildings to be built with $554,000 being alloted to Rockingham County.
The winning bidders were: George W. Kane of Greensboro, $24,990 for an addition to Mayodan High School; Southeastern Construction Co. of Charlotte, $18,338 for a new high school in Ruffin; J.M. Hopper Construction Co. of Leaksville, $30,200 for a high school in Stoneville; Fowler Jones Lumber Co. of Winston-Salem, $31,853 for a school at Simpsonville.

The Reidsville tobacco market began its third week of the season with the heaviest sales since opening day, with more than 200,000 pounds bringing an average of 33 cents a pound.

The Methodist, Moravian, Episcopal, Baptist and Holiness Sunday schools of Mayodan met in a community rally in the Mayodan High School auditorium, filling every seat.

Mrs. G.H. Clark, newly elected president of the Thimble Club of Leaksville-Spray, presided as the club heard a humorous reading by Mrs. G.A. Treadway of “Icy Prinkle’s Detective Experience.”

A Superior Court jury awarded $97,000 to two victims and the father of one of the victims of a truck-car collision at U.S. 29 and U.S. 29-A near Reidsville in 1957.
The verdicts were against Dehart Motor Lines of Hickory and Julius Pinkney, driver of the truck. Attorneys for the company and the driver quickly noted appeals.

Reidsville attorney P.W. Glidewell Jr. was arrested at the Reidsville police station after failing to appear in U.S. Middle District Court for sentencing on charges of failing to pay income taxes in 1954, 1955 and 1956 during which time he had gross income of $27,000.
Federal Judge Edwin M. Stanley issued a warrant for Glidewell’s arrest and a deputy marshal took him into custody .
Glidewell initially pleaded guilty to the charges in December but was granted motions to delay imposition of sentence.

Sales and averages on Rockingham County’s three tobacco markets for one day during the past week: Reidsville, 158,582 pounds, $53.91 per hundredweight; Madison, 150,506 pounds, $48.24 per hundredweight; and Stoneville, 106,622 pounds, $49.94.

W.O. Paschal, under fire for selling gasoline below fair trade prices at his station two miles south of Reidsville, said he has sold his station because he couldn’t meet the competition and comply with the oil company orders.
He said he had tried to stick to the price set by his supplier, Esso Standard Oil Co., but found his nearby competitors were selling their gas from 1 to 3 cents per gallon less.

Gov. Jim Hunt disclosed that he has ordered the Department of Transportation to begin planning immediately for widening U.S. 220 North along a six-mile stretch between N.C. 704 and N.C. 68 in Rockingham County.
Hunt received a standing ovation when he announced the project during a dedication ceremony for N.C. 74 between Madison and Wentworth, which is being named the Wesley D. Webster Highway. Webster is a former county commissioner and state senator but now assistant deputy secretary of Transportation in the Hunt administration.

The Madison aldermen accepted a $69,900 bid from Brown Utility Co. of Concord for work on the town’s wastewater facilities. The bid includes three projects at the plant, including steel and other tanks to be replaced and a flood-pumping station to be rebuilt.

Paschal Construction Co. of Eden was awarded a $114,916 contract for building the Bridge Street Recreation Center starting this month and to be completed by June. The Eden City Council also awarded plumbing, electrical and heating and air conditioning contracts for the building.
