TARBORO (AP) — Prosecutors will not seek the death penalty against a man accused of killing one of six women whose decomposing bodies were found dumped in a rural area outside Rocky Mount.
The Edgecombe County clerk of court said prosecutors announced today that Antwan Maurice Pittman would be spared the death penalty if convicted of murder in the strangling death of 29-year-old Taraha Shenice Nicholson.
The 31-year-old Pittman was charged with first-degree murder last month. Nicholson's body was found in March.
Investigators have released very few details in the case and say they are still investigating five unsolved murders and three missing persons cases that might be connected.
