Guilford County Commissioners have given the formal approval to begin building the county's new 1,000-bed jail.
The overall project, which includes constructing the downtown Greensboro jail, will cost no more than $84.9 million, a price guaranteed by the lead contractor, Balfour Beatty Construction.
Tony Stoneking, a manager from Balfour Beatty working on the jails construction, said that the price is lower than expected and credited the slow economy for finding low bids for subcontractors.
The cost was expected to be $94.5 million.
Stoneking and others have said that they expect to break ground in November.
In 2008, Guilford County voters passed a $115 million bond referendum for to build a jail to ease the load on the countys current overcrowded facility.
