Greensboro's John Isner edged Kittipong Wachiramanowong 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5) Monday in the first round of the Thailand Open.
The 48th-ranked Isner trailed 5-4 in the third set as the young Thai served for the match, but managed to overcome his wild-card opponent.
"I knew my opponent is a good player," said Isner, who had 21 aces. "I got him in the first set, but after that he outplayed me the whole match. And I got a little lucky. I thought to myself maybe he hadn't been in that situation a lot."
Isner, who ousted Andy Roddick in the third round of the U.S. Open, will play either Mischa Zverev of Germany or Leonardo Mayer of Argentina.
Sam Querrey cut his right forearm in a freak accident after practicing for the tournament and will be out at least four to six weeks. The 21-year-old Querrey sat on a glass table after practice Monday and fell through, hurting his arm. The injury required emergency surgery.
SAFINA, VENUS OUT: Defending champion Dinara Safina and Venus Williams were knocked out of the second round by qualifiers at the Toray Pan Pacific Open. Chang Kai-chen, an 18-year-old from Taiwan, upset the top-ranked Safina 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-5. Russian teenager Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova edged Williams 7-6 (6), 7-5.
MEN'S GOLF: Methodist University shot a first-round 286 and leads host Greensboro College by six strokes at the GC Invitational held at the Meadowlands Golf Course. Greensboro's Ben Nihart and MU's Josh Speight are tied for the individual lead after carding 3-under 69s.
WOMEN'S GOLF: Campbell has a five-stroke lead over UNCG at the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic after a second-day 289 for a 585 total of 17 over. Mary Mattson of Campbell has a 2-under 140 total to lead all golfers by five strokes.
