Superintendent's contract extended

GREENSBORO -- Maurice “Mo” Green will at least have the option to stay around for another three years.

The school board voted unanimously Friday morning to extend the superintendent's contract one year, meaning Green's contract is good through 2013.

“He's done a great job and works extremely hard” said school board Chairman Alan Duncan.

The vote came after a nearly two-hour closed session that pushed the Thursday evening meeting into the early hours of Friday. The contract extension did not impact Green's compensation.

Green waived a contractually scheduled three percent raise earlier this year. The raise came as the school board and Green were dealing with a state budget shortfall.

Green said he can see himself with the district through the remainder of the contract and said he appreciates the board's vote of confidence.

“It signals to me the board believes we're heading in the right direction,” he said.

It seems like every time I read that a person's contract has been extended, I read about the getting a job elsewhere shortly afterward.

Nothing about Mr Green, just an observation.

It is unfortunate. I really think he is in over his head. I am grateful that I am not part of that school system anymore. I hope people will start questioning him over finances, etc. I cannot wait to see what the Rhino Times says about this!

We have three kids in the Guilford County School System. We think "Mo" has done a great job in his first year. He is really trying to do a good job. He is nothing like the last egotistical overpaid jerk who left here for sunny California. He really seems to care and understand what is going on. Way to go "Mo"!!!

Congratulations Mo! My wife is an elementary music teacher for Guilford County Schools, and I have continually heard very positive things from her about Mo Green. When she met him in person, she was impressed with his respect for teachers. When other staff members have taken concerns (particularly about potential layoffs) to Mo, he has given prompt responses. More importantly, he has been described by teachers I know as a person who knows how to be professional, while also genuinely caring about the people his decisions impact. I think he has very gracefully taken our school system through the most difficult year the education industry has seen in many decades. Thank you Mo!

I like Mo Green and I like his management style, but I cannot understand why the BOE continues to offer extended contracts to ANY administrator when teachers are on a year to year system. If the wheels fall off the "Green Machine" we should be able to cut him loose with very little money to buy out his contract. As of this decision, we're on the hook for 4 years of salary and benefits regardless of his performance. I hope Mr. Green continues to move the schools forward, and I support him. I just can't support these stupid decisions.

Why extend a contract that has over 2 years left. Why the hurry? A lot can happen in 2 years that could cause people to think differently about Mo.

"He is nothing like the last egotistical overpaid jerk who left here for sunny California"
Mo may not be a "egotistical jerk, but he is overpaid.
By the way from what I understand, the last egotistical jerk who left for sunny California is now in Houston TX. California has no money, so the egotistical jerk left for a more green pasture. I don't think he will last long. Texans will not stand for his egotistical attitude or bow down to worship him like the school board of Guilford Co. did.

I think that Mo has done an excellent job so far. All the people complaining are just mad because they aren't making the money that he is. He has a hard job to do and is responsible for a lot of employees and students. You couldn't do the job any better and handle the pressure with dignity like him. I work for GCS and he has my respect every day for what he is doing. I admire him for sticking with his morals and integrity and taking the steps to insure more safety at our schools. There is still a lot to be done, especially with violence and drug sales at the schools. More parents need to follow his lead and take ownership of how their kids act at school. Your kids aren't perfect!

Well that's a silly response. I didn't see anyone suggesting that Mr. Green's job was easy or that he was overpaid. And I'll disagree with your comment, "You couldn't do the job any better and handle the pressure with dignity like him." I'm quite certain that I can do the job better than anyone else (warning - lack of modesty alert). Of course the only way to prove me wrong is to fire Mo and hire me. But wait... he just got a contract extension, so it will cost a lot more money to make such a change, so that's not going to happen.
Seriously, your statement only makes sense if you believe that Mr. Green is better than anyone else in the whole wide world at being a school superintendent. To believe that, you have to believe that no other superintendent in America is better trained or suited for the job and all othersuperintendents and qualified people with degrees and pedigrees at managing school systems decided not to apply for the job because they heard that Maurice Green, a lawyer with no superintendent experience, put his name in the hat. Like I said... that's just plain silly.
