Nancy Jo Smith: So much to do this fall in Pleasant Garden

(Updated 3:06 am)

We Pleasant Gardeners find our Saturdays busy, busy, busy.
Kids, parents and grandparents juggle schedules to attend soccer, baseball, softball and football games. Coming next month, there will be more choices to add to the mix

The town of Pleasant Garden’s farmers market closes for the year at noon Saturday . It’s the last call to vendors who are still harvesting vegetables, beekeepers and craftspeople.

It should be a big day because a Red Cross blood drive and health fair are also taking place at the Town Hall from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Each donor will receive a free T-shirt and have a chance to win a pair of Delta Air Lines tickets. Donor reservations are encouraged: Do it yourself online at www.membersforlife.org/cbsr/schedule/login.php and enter code 14162, or call 674-3002. Walk-ins also are welcome.

A variety of agencies have been recruited by the town’s Healthy Living Committee to provide free screenings for diabetes, vision and oral cancer checks, blood pressure checks and mammography information.

Bring your insurance information if you want a flu shot.
The town’s annual Pet Day is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 10.
Bring your pets (properly restrained) for affordable rabies vaccinations and/ or microchips.

Watch the sheriff’s K-9 team demonstrations at 9:30 and 11 a.m. Rescue groups will have pets for adoption.

Stay for fun and prizes:

  • 10 a.m.: Best pet trick.
  • 10:30 a.m.: Best pet costume.
  • 11:30 a.m.: Best pet singer/talker.
  •  Noon: Owner/pet look-alikes.

Don’t miss the first Southeast Community Fun Fest from noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 17 at Hagan-Stone Park. The event is sponsored by the Southeast Guilford Community Association, Southeast Community Business Association and Southeast Lifestyle Publications
Enjoy live music on the big stage by the band Blender, puppet shows and pony rides. You’ll have a chance to show off your classic car and shop for handmade gifts. Bring a chair and spend the afternoon.

“Sons and Mothers” is issuing a challenge to all wannabe chefs: Top our special recipe created just for the chili cook-off. Proceeds will benefit southeast Guilford County and the fun-for-all playground to be constructed at Hagan-Stone Park.

This just about brings us to a haunting happening Oct. 31. Check back in a couple of weeks for the inside story of creating tricks and treats Walt Disney-style.

Nancy Jo Smith, grandmother of 12, lives in her childhood home in the center of Pleasant Garden. She enjoys piecing genealogy, history and quilts.
