WINSTON-SALEM (MCT) — A teacher's assistant and assistant football coach at Atkins High School was suspended with pay Wednesday after police said that he punched and kicked a teenager who he believed had broken into his house.
Donald Lamont Carter, 39, has been charged with felony restraint and assault. He was released on a written promise to appear in court.
Winston-Salem police went to 948 Shalimar Drive on Tuesday after getting a call from a man who said that he had detained someone who had broken into his house several days before.
Police said that the man went to a house on his block and confronted the teenager, Jeraimaih Simes, 18, about the break-in. During the confrontation, police said Simes was punched and kicked by the man, then forced to try to find another person who might have been involved in the break-in.
School officials met with Carter yesterday afternoon to discuss his future at the school, said Theo Helm, a spokesman for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. The school system will conduct its own investigation of the incident.
No one has been charged in connection with the break-in at Carter's home. Police said that case is still under investigation.
