Short Orders: Pad Thai owners open second restaurant

Singha Thai (2600 High Point Road; 852-5551) has opened near Florida Street and High Point Road in Greensboro.

Singha Thai is owned by the same folks that own Pad Thai (3932 W. Market St.) in Greensboro, and it offers many of the same menu items as its sister restaurant.

Some specialties include Bangkok Chicken ($4.99 lunch, $6.99 dinner), Bangkok Fish ($6.99/$8.99), a chicken in peanut sauce called Pra Ram ($5.99/$6.99) and Duck Curry (single priced at $12.99).

Singha Thai offers a selection of traditional curries, fried rice and noodle dishes and stir-fried items such as eggplant, ginger or basil. Most dishes come with a choice of meat, vegetables or tofu and range from $4.99 to $6.99 for lunch and $6.99 to $8.99 for dinner.
There also are traditional soups, salads and appetizers, such as a Thai Dumpling ($4.50).

The dining room offers white linen and crystal service, and a patio is available for outdoor seating.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Cafe marks anniversary

It’s been a year since Paul and Joan Shepherd opened Madison Park Cafe (1310 Westover Terrace, Suite 107) after many years of absence from the Greensboro restaurant landscape. Their return garnered a warm welcome.

To mark the one-year anniversary this Friday, Madison Park will offer Chateaubriand, the classic French steak for two, with choice of a glass of red wine for $50 per couple. Call 275-3755 for reservations.

Doughnut shop offers baked sweet rolls, bagels

You didn’t read wrong if you noticed the billboard on Battleground Avenue in Greensboro that indicates Krispy Kreme is offering muffins, bagels and sweet rolls.

The Krispy Kreme (540-1594) at 2401 Battleground Ave. has become the test site for the company’s new Baked Creations.

The baked goods include signature sweet rolls in cinnamon and pecan topped with cream cheese icing, muffins (Banana Nut, Blueberry, Chocolate Chip and Reduced Fat Triple Berry) and bagels. Yes, bagels. Those other baked goods with a hole in the middle. Bagels come in Plain, Cinnamon Raisin, Everything, Asiago Cheese, Whole Grain and Blueberry varieties. Cream cheese spread in three reduced-fat choices are available.

Baked Creations come out of the oven twice daily.

Celebrate farmers

Celebrate farmers from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Earth Fare, 2965 Battleground Ave., Greensboro.

The event features local arts and crafts and musicians as well as produce, meat and jams from local farms.

Grand opening for doughnut shop

Dunkin’ Donuts (315-0500) at 811 S. Holden Road is holding a grand opening Thursday.

The shop has been serving customers for a nearly a month while working out the kinks and putting on the finishing touches.

Two Guys Named Chris from radio station Rock 92 (92.3 FM) will do a remote broadcast and there will be lots of giveaways and a chance to win coffee, doughnuts, Munchkins and muffins for a year.

The shop offers a drive-through, seating and Wifi. Hours are 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Lots of eats for benefit

Treats from Clara Marie’s Bakery, Madison Park Cafe, Saffron, Sweet Temptations Bakery, Taste of Thai and other food retailers and restaurants provide the eats for Pretty in Pink, a benefit for the Women’s Only Mammography Scholarship Fund presented by skirt! magazine from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Westover Gallery of Shops, 1410 Westover Terrace.

In addition to a variety of wines and live music by local groups, the free event also features 10-minute massages, business representatives, giveaways and a silent auction. For more information, call 433-5830.

Pizza chain eyes Triad

Papa Murphy’s, a fast-growing chain of take-and-bake pizza shops, is looking to open nine locations in the Greensboro area in the next five years.

Papa Murphy’s has signed an agreement with Tar Heel Pizza Co. to develop the stores.

The first shop is planned for 4016 Battleground Ave. with an opening in December.

Papa Murphy’s specializes in pre-made carry-out pizzas that are baked at home.

Get a discount on your meal at the Moose Cafe at the Piedmont Triad Farmer’s Market and help out the Second Harvest Food Bank.
Bring in nonperishable food items for Second Harvest and get 20 percent off your meal. The offer is good through Nov. 25. And kids ages 10 and younger eat free after 4 p.m. with the purchase of an adult meal.

Diner adds dinner

Smith Street Diner (438 Battleground Ave.; 379-8666) in downtown Greensboro will begin serving dinner until 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday starting Oct. 6.

The diner has been serving breakfast and lunch for years.

Owner Beth Kizhnerman (Bistro Sofia) says the same menu will be served all day, including breakfast items.

Welcome news for fans of this meat-and-two establishment who enjoy the diner’s meat loaf, hash browns and freshly squeezed orange juice. Check the board for daily specials.

Seasonal menu, new pub

Chef Ben Sullivan is offering a seasonal autumn menu at Vintage 301 (301 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive; 333-3190) in Greensboro’s Southside neighborhood.

The menu highlights flavors and dishes inspired by Sullivan’s travels and features Pork Bolognese, Beet Salad, Fried Apple Ravioli, Coq au Vin, Tuna Chimi and Cornbread Pudding.

Vintage 301 offers both small- and large-plate menus.

Sullivan says he and his team are preparing to open a bar in the same building as Vintage 301. The neighborhood pub will have its own entrance and offer beer, wine and food. He says he hopes to open in October.

Ice cream benefit

Cold Stone Creamery (www.coldstonecreamery.com) will hold the “World’s Largest Ice Cream Social,” a benefit for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America, on Thursday.

From 5 to 8 p.m., customers get a special Jack’s Creation, a three-ounce ice cream flavor created by 5-year-old Wish child Jack, with a donation to Make-A-Wish.

There also will be other activities.

Cold Stone Creamery locations in Greensboro are at 3105 Northline Ave., 4203 W. Wendover Ave. and 1564-C Highwoods Blvd.; in High Point, 3875 John Gordon Lane; in Burlington, 3160 Waltham Blvd.; and in Kernersville, 960 S. Main St.

Japanese and Thai restaurant planned

The building at 3015 High Point Road formerly occupied by Po’ Folks Family Restaurant and Blue Ribbon Restaurant is under renovation. A new street sign at the location reads: Sankura Ichiban Japanase and Thai. Information on an opening date was not available.
