WENTWORTH — A 39-year-old woman wanted on embezzlement charges has been arrested in California.

The Rockingham County Sheriff's Office said Christine Black of 7810 Charles Place in Kernersville is being held on a $900,000 bond in Orange County, Calif. The county district attorney has asked that Black be extradited back to North Carolina.

Black faces nine counts of embezzlement, 18 counts of forgery and 18 counts of uttering a forged instrument. The charges stem from an Aug. 9 report of embezzlement by Sharon Hopper Fine Gardening on Lemons Road.

A subsequent investigation found that signatures had been forged on at least $100,000 worth of checks. The sheriff's office said Black was once employed by the gardening business and was able to make deposits and conduct other financial functions.

The sheriff's office did not say why Black was in California but said one of its detectives figured she was probably there and got the U.S. Marshal's Office to arrest her.
