Cone bars young visitors because of flu concerns

GREENSBORO — Moses Cone Health System is barring those younger than 18 from entering its facilities during the flu season.

The hospital announced the ban today because young people are more likely to catch the strain of H1N1 virus that is prevelent this year and the flu is hard on patients who have other health issues.

The hospital did not say when it would allow young visitors again.

The ban does not apply to patients younger than 18. However, children younger than 18 will not be allowed in lobbies, waiting areas and patient areas of Moses Cone Hospital, The Women's Hospital, Wesley Long Community Hospital and Moses Cone Behavioral Health Center in Greensboro and Annie Penn Hospital in Reidsville.

Children younger than 18 also are restricted from attending classes or touring health system facilities.

Cone also is urging the public not to visit if they do not feel well or have had a fever in the past 24 hours.

Wow, hate it for all the mommies having babies who have other children eager to meet their new siblings. And what will become of Women's Hospital's Mommy and Me classes? I understand the need for precaution but this seems a little extreme.

Shoot, as quick as they herd the new moms in and out, this won't create much of a delay!

Touche, Poindy. My heart also goes out to young people who have loved ones dying in hospitals - to whom they will be denied the chance to say goodbye. I think back to ten years ago when my father died of cancer and I was 15 - to think of myself being banned from being by his bedside until the day he died brings me great sadness. I feel for people in similar situations.

Please be aware that exceptions will be made for end of life situations and other extraordinary circumstances. We ask that anyone with these types of issues talk with the patients nurse--Doug Allred, Public Relations Specialist, Moses Cone Health System.

People take things too literally --- meaning ALL young people under 18 will be banned from the hospitals with no exceptions. Thank you, Doug Allred for explaining. There are just way too many people who flock to the hospital, especially the ER, with family or friends and just hang out in the waiting areas. There is no need for one patient with a minor illness or injury to be accompanied by 5 family members or friends!!

Something needs to change quickly! My sister is expecting her 2nd child any day now. She has to have a C-section. There’s no way we can explain to her 8 yr old that she cannot see her mommy for 3-4 days, as well as her new brother! I have a 13 yr old who has been ecstatic to be at the hospital with us as everyone has done for years! I can understand making some restrictions. However, to ban them 100% completely! What are the fathers supposed to do that may not have other family members to help.…does he leave his wife in the hospital to take care of the other children? Someone did not think this through clearly. And as for me…….I want to be there with her! I don’t want to have to stay home with the children due to this mess. I want to be at the hospital myself! This brings up another point.. things must be getting worse since there was no planning or preparations on this at all. It happened pretty fast. Makes me wonder what they are NOT telling us

This plan has not been well thought out. They are allowing any random visitor to visit as long as they are 18 and over but not allowing a sibling to be there for the birth of their own brother or sister? Who do they expect to take care of these children? They must be expecting fathers to stay home with the other children while the mother gives birth alone? How healthy is that? What happened to family first? If things were so severe you would think they would ban VISITORS FIRST!
