Tuesday, September 22, 2009

GREENSBORO — Greensboro will play host to the first and second rounds of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship in 2012.

"We are honored to be selected to host the first and second rounds of the 2012 NCAA Tournament,” ACC Commissioner John Swofford said in a written statement. "The Greensboro Coliseum has proven to be an outstanding venue for this event."

The ACC and the Greensboro Coliseum have hosted NCAA Tournament games 12 times including the 1974 Final Four, three East Regionals (1976, 1979, 1998) and eight First and Second Rounds (1980, 1983, 1986, 1989, 1992, 2001, 2006 and 2009).

The Coliseum and the ACC also hosted three NCAA Women’s Basketball Regionals in 1999, 2007 and 2008.

Other first- and second-round sites for the 2012 men's tournament are Albuquerque; Columbus, Ohio; Louisville; Nashville; Omaha; Pittsburgh; and Portland, Ore.

Regional sites will be Atlanta, Boston, Phoenix and St. Louis. The 2012 Final Four will be played in the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans.

Charlotte will host the first two rounds in the 2011 tournament at Time Warner Cable Arena on March 18 and 20.

Here are the dates of upcoming ACC and NCAA basketball tournaments at the Greensboro Coliseum:

2010: ACC women on March 4-7, ACC men on March 11-14.

2011: ACC women on March 3-6, ACC men on March 10-13.

2012: ACC women on March 1-4, NCAA men (first two rounds) on March 16 and 18. (Note: ACC men's tournament will be in Atlanta this year)

2013: ACC woman on March 7-10, ACC men on March 14-17.

2014: ACC women on March 6-9, ACC men on March 13-16.

Note:  In 2013, 2014 and 2015, the ACC has the option to move the men's tournament to another site. If this happens, the Greensboro Coliseum would be awarded the 2016 event. The ACC also has the option to extend the run of the women's tournament at the coliseum to 2016.

Congrats. Great for Greensboro but I hope the City gets High Point Road cleaned up in that area before 2012. The City could have used the money wasted on sidewalks on Guilford College road for the HP Rd. area.

Its cool GSO gets all these tournaments but I have to agree with the other post. GSO street planners needs to get their priorities in order. GSO has a beautiful baseball park, yet the roads around it are terrible. The same goes for the roads around the coliseum. It sure looks bad on the city to have people coming from everywhere and see how badly our roads are. They can spend money planting trees on Friendly Ave, but cant repave the roads that need it...doesnt make alot of sense to me. But they dont ask my opinion, only force me to pay tax money being wasted.
