Rockingham People: N.C. Arts Council awards $26,534 to Rockingham

The N.C. Arts Council has awarded the Rockingham County Arts Council a $26,534 Arts in Communities grant. The money will be used to pay for arts programs in the schools and community.

“State funds allow us to provide quality arts programming for county residents,” said Vicki Longhofer, executive director of the county arts council. “Last year, 12 local schools and arts groups benefited from this grant assistance. The local impact of these projects is evident in the participating audience numbers collectively reported: more than 10,000 Rockingham County citizens of all ages.”

The N.C. Arts Council anticipates distributing $7.4 million in state and federal grants to schools, arts organizations and other nonprofit groups this fiscal year.

The Home Savings Bank Charitable Endowment awarded the Rockingham County Literacy Project an $8,500 grant for operating expenses.

Volunteers with the Literacy Project teach adults in Rockingham County how to read, write, speak English and do basic math.

“The Home Savings Bank Charitable Endowment is happy to help support the great work the Rockingham County Literacy Project does to help the adults of Rockingham County,” said Jonathan Jobe, president of Home Savings Bank.

The Home Savings Bank Charitable Endowment gives grants to nonprofits in the bank’s service areas. The endowment awarded more than $150,000 to 10 organizations in its first two grant cycles.

Jeanne T. Stanley of Reidsville will receive the “Friend of RCC” award during the Rockingham Community College Foundation’s “Evening of Recognition,” to be held Oct. 1 at the Pennrose Park Country Club. The event will also honor Subway of Rockingham County with the “Corporate Benefactor Award.”

The foundation hosts the annual event to recognize those who have supported the college.    

Tickets are $50 per person. Gold Sponsor packages are $500 and Silver Sponsor packages are $250.

Brenda Sutton, director of Rockingham County’s Cooperative Extension, was the guest speaker at the Reidsville Kiwanis Club’s  meeting on Sept. 10.

Sutton spoke about healthful eating habits. She told them that $15 million is spent each year on medical expenses because of obesity. She said there is a need for people to eat more locally grown fruits and vegetables to combat obesity. Sutton’s Web site, www.theproducelady.org, offers ideas for healthful eating.

The Kiwanis Club meets at noon on Thursdays at the Golden Corral on Freeway Drive.

Bryon C. Coro graduated from the Army ROTC leader development and assessment course at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Wash.

Coro underwent 32 days of training, which evaluates officer potential by assessing intelligence, common sense, ingenuity and physical stamina. The course is required by cadets in their junior and senior year of college. Cadets are commissioned as second lieutenants in the Army, National Guard, or Reserve upon completion of the course, ROTC program and college graduation.

Coro graduated from McMichael High School in 2004.
