GREENSBORO — While City Council District 2 candidate Nettie Coad campaigned this week, she found a voter who believed she was in a particular voting district but turned out to be in another.
“They found that the lines removed her from District 2,” said Coad, who has worked in many Greensboro campaigns over the years. “This is a voter, she wasn’t aware that it had changed.”
So did Greensboro change its districts and not tell anybody?
No, said Guilford County elections director George Gilbert.
In 2008 after the city annexed about 10,000 new residents, 26 precincts were moved to new districts.
The Oct. 6 primary is the first time the changes affect voters in those districts.
“It was the fact that it occurred last year,” Gilbert said, referring to the presidential election that dominated headlines. “People weren’t focused on the district changes.”
So, for those who need to know, here are the changes:
“We sent out new voter ID cards to over 48,000 who were affected,” Gilbert said. “Everybody was paying attention to the presidential contest, and nobody was paying attention to the municipal elections.”
