Southwest Park opens in Guilford County

Monday, September 14, 2009
(Updated Tuesday, September 15 - 6:49 am)

GREENSBORO — Until now in southwest Guilford, you had to come to the city to play ball, paddle a boat or fish in a park.

No longer: With the opening of Southwest Park, county residents have 80 new acres to play along the banks of Randleman Lake — and a place to run big and small dogs.

“The residents of this part of the county are overdue for this kind of facility,” County Commissioner Billy Yow said at Saturday’s grand opening of Southwest Park, south of Kivett Drive and I-85.

“Now, you can come to a park that’s a real park without having to drive through town to get to it.”

With a new marina, picnic shelters, baseball fields, hiking trails and walking tracks, Southwest Park runs along the Randleman Dam that crosses the Guilford-Randolph County line south of Greensboro.

The park rents canoes and allows nongasoline craft at the boat launch, but the lake is closed October through March. The park is open until Dec. 15, then reopens March 1.

Saturday’s dedication of the park revealed the community effort the project required: from Southern Guilford High School, which brought its marching band to perform, benches and bird feeders had come from the school’s carpentry shop, as well as wood work for the trails and dog park.

Park manager Berry Bynum said the watch word is “perennial,” and not just in terms of plants — Southwest Park is built to last.

“I went to Southern, my kids all went to Southern,” he said. “Not only is this my community, this is my park, too.”

Kim Venable, a Sumner resident who is on the board of directors of Pinecroft Sedgefield Fire Department, reflected on the key role that community organizations such as the Ruritans have played in youth leagues and athletics facilities.

But as work schedules become more demanding, it becomes difficult to volunteer time to support private efforts.

Along with youth leagues, Bynum said Southwest Park gives Scouts a new gathering place.

Very nice story. Now, how about the google map showing exactly where it is?

Now if they'd correct the story too that might make it less confusing.

As nice as it is having a new park in Guilty County I feel there is so much more Guilty County could have spend the money on.

Knowing the leadership in Guilford County, they would have spent the money on something else. At least folks in SW Guilford have what appears to be a great recreational facility that the average Joe & family can enjoy. I'm looking forward to visiting the park and am especially interested in the dog park. There's some neat photo's and information on the park's website. One thing I don't understand is why the park is operated by the City of Gibsonville Recreation Department, its a pretty good distance from Gibsonville, and they have the zip code as 27405 which is the zip for the NE area of Greensboro and Guilford County. But on second thought, given the mentality of the Guilford County Board of Commissioners, maybe it does make sense. Anyway, I'm looking forward to visiting the park frequently and do appreciate all the folks that helped make it possible.

If you know where Groometown Road is, then turn off on either Jonquil Drive or Wall Road and it will take you to the park. The people working at the park will make you feel welcome and they are very helpful.

Now this is a good use of taxes. Thanks.

The dam is in RANDOLPH COUNTY. The dam doesn't cross the county line, nor is it even close. The park is in Guilford County - so how does it "run along" the dam? Trouble with the facts again Ahearn?

Yes, the Randleman Water Project is in Guilford and Randolph counties. As a matter of fact, parts of Randleman are in Guilford County.

Get it right .....get it right? In other words know your community and facts before you get on here trying to be right .. cant wait to visit the park myself and enjoy what good people are trying to do to improve things.

Yes the water is in Guilford and Randolph counties - but the dam itself is in Randolph. The story incorrectly states that the park "runs along" the dam. It does not.
And the entire town of Randleman is in Randolph County.
Read the story. Look at a map. Drive to the park. You can't see the dam from there!

No, the entire city of Randleman is NOT in Randolph Co. I live there and pay Guilford Co. taxes!!

Maybe you have a Randleman address - but you aren't in the city limits of Randleman if you live in Guilford County.

Yes, a good response on the map. And yes, I'll admit to living on that side of town (in the county), I just wonder how the people on the southwest side will feel about driving 20 minutes east to get to the park. The "lake" runs quite away up the little creek beds. I believe the creek that crosses Kivett below the Martin-Marietta quarry is a non-moving body of water now. No matter, a good use of tax dollars that will add to the quality of life in Guilford county for some time. They certainly have done a good job of putting parks by every reservoir and sewer line right-of-way they could manage. Kudos for making maximum usage of public owned acreage.
