HIGH POINT — A 23-year-old man police said ran over a 2-year-old child faces charges including assault with a deadly weapon.
Maurice Deon Belser, 23, of 707 Tryon Ave., was driving his vehicle in a careless and reckless manner in the 600 block of Amos Street about 8:32 p.m. Saturday, according to High Point police.
At 603 Amos St., a crowd from a party celebrating the child's birthday was in the yard and the road.
Belser continued to accelerate his car down the road and ran over the child, police said.
The child was taken to High Point Regional Hospital, then later transferred to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
The child suffered severe head injuries.
Belser was charged with careless and reckless driving and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, police said.
He was being held in the Guilford County jail in High Point under a $30,000 secured bond.
