Morehead Memorial Hospital honored its 2009 summer volunteers recently during a celebration at Graystone Farm in Reidsville.
There were 53 middle school and high school students who volunteered at the hospital making beds, filling water pitchers, staffing the information desk and gift shop, and assisting with recreation at Morehead Nursing Center. The volunteers worked more than 3,000 hours.
Students who received pins for 50 hours of service are: Ashley Anderson, Jesse Barnes, Nahome Befekadu, Morgan Brame, Brianna Carter, Richard Chu, Sidney Corum, Katy Drews, David Fleming, Garret Hankins, Fatima Hernandez, Carrie Isley, Tanesha Lane, Faith Lowe, Kunal Patel, Brandi Pickard, Nicholas Price, Kristin Richardson, Chelsea Robertson, Josh Simmons, Jonathan Smith and Megan Stuckey.
Students who received pins for 100 hours of service: Sarah Brewer, Brittany Cass, Brianna Corum, Frances Cundiff, Jessica Holland, Mallory Minichello, Melissa Murphy, Christina Owens, Josiah Tesfaye, Tanner Trantham and Michaela Woodard.
Students who received pins for 150 hours of service: Lauren Chrismon, Heather Dean, Keandra Hampton, Kiara Scales and Nychele Wilson.
Students who received pins for more than 200 hours of service: Kristina McCarty (218 hours), J.T. Chambers (248 hours), Kristin Morris (248 hours), Skylar Roberts (296 hours), Emily Gillie (304 hours) and Mariah Miller (472 hours).
J.T. Chambers, Sidney Corum, Keandra Hampton, Faith Lowe and Josh Simmons all received awards for perfect attendance. Kristina McCarty was recognized for covering 22 extra shifts; Brittany Cass for being the first-year volunteer with the most hours in 2009; and Mariah Miller for being the returning volunteer with the most hours in 2009.

Capt. Abner Bullins of the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office was the guest speaker at the Eden Lions Club meeting on Sept. 3. Bullins talked about the sheriff’s office’s employees and their tasks.

Mr. Rooter Plumbing has been selected one of the 2009 Top 100 Franchises by the World Franchising Network. Mr. Rooter has a franchise in Eden.
This list is published in the third edition of “Bond’s Top 100 Franchises.”
“It’s exciting to be part of a prestigious group of companies,” said Zane Gauldin of the Mr. Rooter Plumbing of the Piedmont franchise. “We enjoy providing this community with professional and customer-focused services.”
The franchises were chosen based on historical performance evaluations, brand identification and franchisee satisfaction, among other factors. Companies must have 50 or more operating units to be eligible.

The Rockingham County Literacy Project will offer training for volunteer tutors from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 5, Oct. 8, Oct. 12, and Oct.15. Training will be held at 705-A Washington St. in Eden. Potential tutors must attend all four sessions.
English as a Second Language tutor training will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 19 and Oct. 22 at the same location. Those interested in becoming ESL tutors must have completed adult literacy tutor training.
