Short Orders: New owner remakes State Street coffee shop

Wednesday, September 9, 2009
(Updated Thursday, September 10 - 10:46 am)

State Street in Greensboro is getting a new coffee shop, sort of.

Carolina Coffee at 400 State St. has closed. Luke Whitten, who was an employee of Carolina Coffee for more than two years and managed the shop for the past few months, has picked up a new lease for the space and reopened the shop as Greensborough Coffee.

Whitten says he is changing the ambience of the shop to spotlight the heritage of Greensboro and to create a relaxed atmosphere by opening the long-dormant patio and offering live music.

“I want to make it more of a people spot,” says Whitten, who also is renovating the shop with more comfortable seating. “I want it to appeal to everybody, to be universal where people can meet and hold discussions.”

The shop will continue to offer daily coffee brewed with beans from Carolina Coffee Roasting Co.. New espresso drinks and syrups will be offered, in addition to concoctions labeled with Greensboro-themed names. Greensborough Coffee will also sell locally baked pastries and goods.

The shop also offers WiFi.

Hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Changes for coffee roaster

Speaking of Carolina Coffee Roasting Co., the longtime roaster has a new owner and a new location.

After almost 10 years, Jody White sold the company to Candy Azarcon , who had been an employee for about a year. The roasting company was founded in 1992 by Kathy Gingrich Lubbers, and White took over the company in 1999.

Azarcon runs the business with Jose Francis Plama.

Azarcon says the roaster is the same and the company still employs a chemist to make sure quality is consistent.

The company recently moved from Revolution Mill to a new location at 5709-B W. Market St. in Greensboro. The phone number, (800) 457-2556, remains the same.

Carolina Coffee Roasting Co. is offering free samples of its brewed coffee through the end of the month. Stop by the new location for a taste.

New restaurant planned

When construction begins on 324 South Elm, a five-story multi-use development in downtown Greensboro, chefs Robert Pearse and Trey May will be on board. The two are planning a restaurant in the development called Bin 33.

The concept, May says, will focus on casual dining and reasonably priced medium- and high-end wines.

One aspect of the concept is to allow patrons to lease and stock their own individual wine “bins” with selections at a retail price. Thus the name.

May says the menu will focus on seasonal and regional ingredients and be “autobiographical in scope,” culling from both his and Pearse’s experience and travels.

They plan to open in the spring.
