BURLINGTON (AP) — Researchers will comb a historic North Carolina battleground with an electronic device in hopes of finding artifacts from the late 18th century.
On Friday, researchers from Wake Forest University will use a magnetometer to search for artifacts buried at the the Alamance Battleground State Historic Site in Burlington. The magnetometer detects disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field caused by metals.
Volunteer historians and archaeologists will confirm the results Saturday.
The researchers have used a 1771 map commissioned by Royal Gov. William Tryon to determine where to dig for remains.
On May 16, 1771, a group of farmers angry over excessive taxes and fees fought militia forces under Tryon's command. Tryon's forces drove the Regulators from the battlefield, and seven of the resisters were hanged.
