Welcome to my first column showcasing Northeast Park.
Each month, I will share happenings and upcoming events at the park. I am the marketing and event coordinator, which is just a fancy title for someone who oversees all facility rentals (shelter, event center, pool party, swim lessons), as well as planning and coordinating special events like July 3 fireworks, Haunted Trail, Fall Fest, Astronomy Nights, Wine & Cheese Tasting other exciting activities.
Following many years in private industry, I returned to college in 2003 and graduated in May 2006 with a degree in therapeutic recreation from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio.
In May 2008, I earned my advanced degree in leisure services management from UNCG. I live in Greensboro, and my three grown children and their children are back in cold, snowy Ohio.
In addition to my duties at the park, I teach exercise and cooking, which are also my hobbies.
Our 374-acre park is owned by Guilford County and operated by the Town of Gibsonville. When you visit Northeast Park, you can choose from a variety of outdoor experiences at our state-of-the-art aquatic center, miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails, athletic fields, picnic shelters, playgrounds and open space.
I invite you to visit us soon and urge you to visit our Web site at www.northeastpark.info for the latest information.
Our next big event is the Family Campout, starting at 6 p.m. Sept. 18. Join us for a night of camping, fun, food and prizes.
The cost is $20 per family of four. Additional campers pay $3 each.
Activities include Friday evening cookout, scavenger hunt, campfire and s’mores, late night hike and Saturday morning breakfast. Families must provide their own tents and sleeping bags.
Registration is required, and space is limited. Deadline is Sept. 14. Call 375-7722 for information and registration.
We are already working on this year’s third annual Haunted Trail. This year the trail will be open Oct. 16, 17, 23, 24 and 29-31.
Allow 20 to 30 minutes to experience the dark and eerie surprises that await you. Who knows what or who lurks around each corner? Admission is $10 per person.
Watch for details about our Fall Fest and Star-Gazing, both Oct. 24.
If you’ve never been to Northeast Park, I invite you to visit soon. Returning visitors are always welcome.
Make it a goal to try a different activity each time you come. Hike or bike a different trail, creek walk at the low water crossing, watch a weekend soccer game, pack a picnic lunch, bring your fishing rod, or just sit in a field and read a book.
Northeast Park is at 3421 Northeast Park Drive in Gibsonville. If you’re using a GPS for driving directions enter 4010 High Rock Road in Gibsonville.
