College football: Wolfpack's opener 'a measuring stick' for program, QBs

Calling Thursday's opener against South Carolina "a measuring stick" for his program, N.C. State coach Tom O'Brien said Friday he's eager to see how far his Wolfpack has come since starting last season with a blowout loss in Columbia.

He bristled at suggestions N.C. State is out to avenge last year's embarrassment, insisting "there's no such thing as revenge. It's our fault we lost 34-0."

O'Brien said All-ACC quarterback Russell Wilson will start the game and take most of the snaps, but backup Mike Glennon will also play so he can get game experience.

"Sometime during the second quarter (Glennon) will go in," O'Brien said. "Whether it's a set number of series or a feel thing, he'll definitely play in a meaningful situation in the second quarter."

SOUTH CAROLINA: Coach Steve Spurrier says receiver Dion LeCorn won't play Thursday at N.C. State because he is still recovering from a broken left leg. Another receiver, DeMario Bennett, could also miss the game with a shoulder injury.

FLORIDA STATE: The NCAA must release documents on Florida State's appeal of an academic cheating penalty, a Florida judge ruled Friday, noting the NCAA's rationale for keeping the documents secret would "emasculate" the state's broad public access laws.

The documents focus on Florida State's appeal of a plan to strip wins from coaches and athletes in 10 sports. Bobby Bowden would lose 14 wins.

The Associated Press sued for access to records that include the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions' response to Florida State's appeal. The school is being penalized because 61 athletes received improper help from staffers who gave them answers to an online music test or typed papers for them.

DIVISION II: St. Paul's canceled today's game with West Virginia Wesleyan because the Tigers haven't received a shipment of helmets and pads.

"I'm flabbergasted," Wesleyan athletics director Ken Tyler said. "... It's a real punch in the gut. Beyond that, I feel it was very unprofessional."

Tyler said St. Paul's AD Leroy Bacote called him with the news Thursday, less than 24 hours before Wesleyan was scheduled to travel 341 miles to play in South Hill, Va.

Tyler said he asked Bacote how the team practiced without helmets and pads and was told the players did calisthenics in shorts and T-shirts.
