Private and public elementary schools in Guilford County can earn some cash and promote recycling in their communities by participating in the fourth annual Kids, Cans & Cash contest, organized by Greensboro, High Point and Guilford County.

The governments' recycling departments started holding this contest in recognition of America Recycles Day on Nov. 15.

The contest works like this: Students collect aluminum cans and bring them clean, bagged and uncrushed to recycling facilities in Greensboro and High Point Nov. 2-13. The three schools that collect the most cans will receive an evening of pizzas and recreation at Proehlific Park. Schools must register by Oct. 24.

Twenty-four schools participated last year and raised a total of $1,731, paid out by the recycling facilities.

Madison Elementary, one of last year's winning schools, raised $125 for supplies and plans to participate again, Principal Judy Robbins said.

"The entire community really participated in the event and provided the students with a good learning experience on what they can do on a daily basis to help keep the planet green," Robbins said.

Learn more about the contest by contacting Yvonne Foust, Greensboro's recycling education specialist, at 373-2053.
