HIGH POINT — A local horse trainer learned Friday that the open road is not only dangerous for humans, but also for animals.

Danielle Dempsey’s truck towing a horse trailer overturned on Interstate 85 Business near the Surrett Drive exit in High Point.

Two horses sustained minor injuries and a dog went missing for hours after the crash.

But the animals are back home at Kirkpatrick Farms in Thomasville.

After the accident, traffic was rerouted for about 90 minutes. The lanes reopened shortly thereafter.

No one was seriously injured.

A veterinarian checked the two horses and gave one stitches in its right leg. They are stiff, sore and “banged up,” but not seriously injured.

Dempsey was driving to a horse show with the dog in the truck when the vehicle slipped and slid.

Six-month-old Maggie, a Beagle and Australian Shepherd mix, ran away out of fear.

“As soon as the truck came to a stop, she bolted out of the broken window and into the woods,” Dempsey said.

She distributed fliers to nearby businesses and contacted the Guilford County Humane Society to report the dog missing. She even offered a reward for the person who safely returned Maggie.

Dempsey and her friends returned to the crash site around dusk and walked through the woods, yelling the dog’s name.

“I was calling her and I saw her just come darting out of the woods,” Dempsey said.

She was thrilled to be reunited with her dog. Maggie seems thrilled to return to the farm.

“Now she’s playing with her other dogs and running around happy like nothing ever happened,” Dempsey said.
