MEBANE — The GE Consumer & Industrial plant here is cutting 54 hourly positions at its local plant.
In a news release, the company said it plans to lay off 33 workers. Another 21 job cuts will come through attrition and buyouts to employees eligible for early retirement.
The company blamed the job cuts on a decline in orders. The plant makes products to distribute, protect and control electrical power and equipment for commercial, industrial, residential and utility applications.
The layoffs and buyouts will leave about 200 employees at the plant at 6801 Industrial Drive.
The Times-News of Burlington reported that the plant in eastern Alamance County opened in 1972 and at one time employed as many as 700. The newspaper also reported that the plant cut 130 positions in the first half of this year.
Editor's note: An earlier version of this story had an incorrect number of job cuts. The company in a news release originally said it planned to cut 55 jobs, but it later rescinded one of the layoffs.
