Greensboro’s John Isner retired with an injury in the third set Wednesday at the Cincinnati Masters, losing to Jeremy Chardy 6-7(1), 6-3, 4-1 ret.
Isner has played with a brace after injuring his left ankle at the L.A. Open in on July 29.
Fellow American Sam Querrey matched the fifth-ranked Andy Roddick shot-for-shot and made the biggest ones in a pair of tiebreakers, setting up a 7-6 (11), 7-6 (3) victory.
Playing his first match of the tournament, Roddick blew a 5-2 lead in the first-set tiebreaker, then lost his cool in a back-and-forth second set. It was Querrey’s first victory in four career matches against Roddick.
The top four seeds all advanced.
No. 1 Roger Federer held serve throughout a 6-3, 7-5 win over Jose Acasuso. Andy Murray won his first match as the world’s No. 2 player, beating Nicolas Almagro 7-6 (3), 6-2. No. 3 Rafael Nadal, recovering from two months off to let his aching knees heal, beat Andreas Seppi 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3) in a match twice delayed by rain. Fourth-seeded Novak Djokovic beat Croatia’s Ivan Ljubicic 7-6 (5), 6-4 in another opening match.
