GREENSBORO — A cab driver was shot and killed Wednesday night in what police believe was a robbery.
Police identified the victim as Joseph Adeyanju Adefolalu, 54.
Police said Adefolalu was shot while driving in the 1200 block of North Raleigh Street about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.
He then crashed his cab and was later pronounced dead at Moses Cone Hospital.
Police said they have no suspects in the attack.
Adefolalu was the second United Yellow Taxi driver to be robbed in that area this week.
Shortly after midnight Monday, a man robbed a driver at 2124 Textile Drive.
Adefolalu was a devout Christian, husband and father of three.
He was an ordained deacon at Redeemed Christian Church of God—Living Waters in Greensboro.
Adefolalu’s 21-year-old son, Tutu, said he will remember his father kneeling at the foot of the bed every morning, praying and reading the Bible.
“From a young age, he instilled in me and my siblings a lot of values and morals, especially in obeying God,” Adefolalu said.
The younger Adefolalu said church and family members started singing and praying as soon as they learned about the shooting.
Tutu Adefolalu said his father also taught hard work.
He took on a part-time job as a cab driver to earn extra money and to break away from his main occupation, which was writing.
Joseph Adefolalu wrote three books about Christianity and his experiences as a diplomat for the Nigerian Embassy in the United States.
He edited a fourth book Thursday morning, his son said.
When he wasn’t writing or driving, Tutu Adefolalu said, he was volunteering at the church.
He believes his father lived each day to the fullest and for God.
“We’re trying to get from a place of grieving to a place of remembering and celebrating his life.”
