Neo-Nazi event creates parallels to clash in 1979

GREENSBORO — It’s a familiar script in this town. Neo-Nazis. Anti-Nazi protesters. A day picked for a confrontation.

But the date for this showdown isn’t 1979 — it’s 2009.

In response to suggestions that the National Socialist Movement is planning a conference in Greensboro, protesters are organizing what they’re calling a counter-response.

A poster on an anarchist Web site, Infoshop News, has issued a “call to action” for a confrontation during the conference scheduled for Aug. 29.

“As they are inviting white supremacists and fascists from all over the East Coast, North Carolina anti-racists are inviting anti-racists from all over the East Coast to join us in confronting them,” the site says. “We won’t take this lying down.”

The possibility of a confrontation between neo-Nazis and opponents provides an uncomfortable echo of one of the darkest episodes in the city’s history: the 1979 Klan-Nazi shootings, during which five people died.

The plans for the confrontation are vague, but the goal is “keeping these kinds of groups weak and disorganized,” according to the site.

The National Socialist Movement’s plans are hazy as well.

The Detroit-based group, which is “open to non-Semitic heterosexuals of European Descent” and promotes white separation, has announced only the date for the conference, not the location.

The group’s Web site urges members from 10 states along the East Coast to attend the meeting, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

That will be followed by a gathering for those interested in learning more.

“The NSM then will host a meet and greet for supporters and interested parties ...to come and see what makes the NSM the fastest growing and most active White Civil Rights group in the Country!” according to the site.

Despite the lack of firm information, police are preparing for the event based on information that the city could serve as host.

“There’s a lot of planning in the works,” Capt. Janice Rogers said. “We’re going to allocate the resources to keep everybody safe.”

Police are staying quiet about the possibility of a protest during the event.

“I have no comment to make about this right now,” Rogers said.

The potential of dueling groups meeting in Greensboro comes 30 years after the infamous Klan-Nazi shootings, which took place during a “Death to the Klan” march in a public housing community.

Five marchers were killed in the confrontation with Klan members and neo-Nazis.

According to the anarchist site, the hotel that would serve as host to the conference hasn’t been announced yet, but it promises that more details will be made available.

“It is typical for fascists to keep logistical details secret until the last minute to prevent disruption or confrontation,” the site says. “Tell your friends, take the day off work, and stay tuned.”

Please don't rewrite history. It was the Communist Workers Party, vs Klan shootings. There were no Nazi's or Neo Nazi's involved.

J Peterman,
NAACP's mission statement: "The mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic "EQUALITY" of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination.

So it's ok for me to refer to my black friends as "coloreds"?

tobi

Not unless you are willing to refer to all your minority friends as colored people. It's not just an African American establishment even though it was founded on that basis. You don't have to be black to join the naacp unlike that of a Neo Nazi organization where your race is one of the top requirements.

Actually self-identified Nazi Ronald Wayne Wood was involved in the Nov. 3 clash. Wood was described as "chief of Forsyth County unit of the National Socialist Party, and one of the leaders of the party's so-callled "storm troopers," the paramiltary arm of the Nazi organization." Rayford M. Caudle, also a member of that group, admitted to being involved in the event. (Greensboro Daily News, Nov. 5 1979)

The Neo Nazi's have as much right to hold their conference in GSO as the colored people have to hold a racist naacp conference.

Terry,

I've never heard of members of the NAACP encouraging its members to engage in acts of violence or terrorism. I've never heard of the NAACP trying to recant or deny a massive and historically proven act of genocide like the Holocaust. And I've never heard of the NAACP rejecting membership to someone based on their skin color or lineage. White, black, brown, or anything else, if you want to join the NAACP they will let you.

Attempt joining the Neo Nazis without pure European "Aryan" decent, and your membership application will be quickly denied.

In other words, your comparison is broken.

How many times have you ever seen the naacp come to the aid of a white, litino or asian. Please post the link to the stories. It is easy to say they do but prove it. Have you forgotten about Watts,CA back in the 60's and the naacp tried to justify it. Quit talking BS and check the facts.
The riots began on August 11, 1965, in Watts, a neighborhood in Los Angeles, when Lee Minikus, a California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer, pulled over Marquette Frye, who Minikus believed was intoxicated because of his observed erratic driving. Frye failed to pass sobriety tests; including walking in a straight line and touching his nose, and was arrested soon after. Minikus refused to let Frye's brother, Ronald, drive the car home, and radioed for it to be impounded.

Right TerryT!
If I remember correctly, one of the the 3 black women on city council announced at Tuesday's meeting about the racist NAACP's 100th anniversary celebration. They didn't mention the NSM's plans. It's perfectly OK for the black community to continuously shove their agenda down our throats and then call white folks racists for anything we do that doesn't include them.
The media needs to stay out of this and expecially stop comparing it to 1979!!! Just report the facts of current news and refrain from bringing up the past - it isn't relevent!

Congratulations to all those who continually bring up the events of 30 yrs. ago. You have managed to keep it alive and in the public's eyes so that now every hate group on both sides knows about Greensboro and will be wanting to have a repeat of that showdown.

I think we should be proactive with this and go ahead and issue a corporate apology now for whatever could happen...or at the very least, a statement of regret.

Why is it still the NAACP? Since we DON'T say colored people, it shuld be NAAAA! African American is politically correct these days! NAAAA works for me!

JoeScott

August 20, 2009 - 8:42 am EDT

Tuffi,

I feel the reason we don't say "colored people" when referring to black people is because all people are colored. It's not specific enough, and implies that we as white people are above being "colored."

Hence, the NAACP doesn't need to change it's name, because ideally, the group strives to advance all people by making sure we are all equal.

If it weren't for the N&Rs contribution to yellow journalism, this meeting would come and go in near anonymity. It would bring so little attention to itself that almost nobody would ever realize that Neo-Nazis were even in Greensboro, and that's the way it should have been. Instead we'll have a bunch of drama, conflict, and hard feelings brought to the surface once again. It's just another round on the circus ride...

My God! Life goes on. Get over it.
Enough money, time and heartache has been spent on Nov 3, 1979. Why do we insist on bringin up the past. The people that were part of this, are now in there sixty's and seventy's. If they want to continue this stupid fight let them (Jim Melvin & Jesse Jackson). The ones of you that want let this die (Diane Bellany-Small), are only going by hear-say, and in a court of law hear-say is nothing. Do you get it NOTHING. Eveyone needs to stop crying wolf and get on with life. Everyone has been treated unfairly sometime in their life and not everything in life is fair, but there is tomorrow and we need to live each day as the present and stop trying to figure out thirty years ago.

The racist troll comments on this story show exactly why anti-racist organizing is still necessary to oppose not only the Neo-Nazis but also all the white supremacists posting on the N&R.

We will never sit idly by and watch as murderous thugs hold organization-building events in our back yard. Maybe you don't give a sh** about neo-nazis coming or you didn't want the public to know about your plans, but we've studied history and we know that a violent cancer of a group like the NSM shouldn't be welcome into our town. Is there a law against them coming? No. Does that mean anyone has to volunteer to host them at their hotel or conference room? Absolutely not. Any company or organization that chooses to host them is collaborating.

August 20, 2009 - 1:20 pm EDT

You are wrong. Any hotel that refuses to allow a group to pay for accomodations based on ideology, race, etc, opens themselves up to litigation that would cost thousands in a civil suit, not to mention the punitive award. You have the mentality that these hate groups are looking for, people that will be baited into a dramatic response that will only gain them exactly what they want...attention to their message. If you organize against them you will not only escalate the situation into potential violence, you will be playing the dual role as a puppet on their strings. Let them come and go in silence and their message loses credibility, and the group remains irrelevant.

It's not that we don't care . . . we just don't care if colored's are offended anymore. I for one am sick and tired of certain minorities shooting, stabbing, killing taxi cab drivers doing hommie invations, drumming up false racial lawsuits, bad cops sueing the city, 'cause they got caught or almost caught . . . where I live . . . and then complain like someone white was after them. WTF people of color, WTF.
