High Point tries to reduce clutter outside stores

HIGH POINT (MCT) — Some businesses that display large, bulky items outdoors may have to rearrange some of their inventory under an ordinance amendment adopted by the High Point City Council.

The change, approved this week, regulates the display of portable storage containers and Dumpsters, whether for sale, lease or rent, in various commercial zoning districts.

The rule applies to outlets such as big-box retail stores that feature items such as PODS -- large, portable storage containers -- and display them close to the street.

Previously, Dumpsters and storage containers for lease could be displayed within 10 feet of the curb. Such items now must be placed behind the principal building setback.

"Certainly it pushes them farther from the street, which reduces clutter, which I think was council's intent," said Doug Loveland of the High Point Planning and Development Department.

Just like restrcting clutter in residential areas, commercial areas should be held to the same standards. Good for council, because that kind of equality it is good for the entire city. AC

This is as silly as not parking cars in your yard. I do have a driveway and use it, but I couldn't care less if Home Depot or Lowes wants to sell things out of their parking lots or my neighbors park in their yards. Please High Point City Council, consider doing something about incessantly barking dogs and dogs on chains (could they be related?) I realize you can't please everyone, but I for one would be eternally grateful if you solved the problem about barking dogs.

Sounds to me as if High Point City Council has gone on a Power Trip. Forcing people to buy gravel if they have to park their cars in their yard. As long as it is a driveway, what difference does it make whether it has gravel or not?
