RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina man is recanting his allegation that a longtime state senator tried to fondle him more than a decade ago.
Stacey Scott said Monday he was high on drugs when he made the claim in an interview with a Wilmington television station a year ago. The 27-year-old Scott now says he lied in the interview, which was broadcast last week.
Scott's claim against state Sen. R.C. Soles of Tabor City led the local police chief and district attorney to ask the State Bureau of Investigation to probe the allegation.
Soles is the longest-serving lawmaker in the General Assembly. He said Monday he knew Scott's claims were false. The 74-year-old lawmaker said he's glad Scott acknowledged he made up the story.
