Summerfield seeking bids on soil testing

(Updated 5:20 pm)

The Summerfield Town Council agreed Tuesday night to look for a company that will provide soil testing services for Summerfield Athletic Park, according to the town clerk’s report.

The contract is not to exceed $20,000.

Because the qualifications for this project are so specific, the lowest bidder will not be sought, but the bidders with the best qualifications and then lowest price will be selected, Valarie Halvorsen, town clerk, said Wednesday .

The board also agreed to auction a vacant house at 5200 U.S. 220 North, the site for the athletic park.

Govdeals Auction will handle the sale. Proceeds will reimburse the town for demolition costs from the R.P. Murray construction contract.

The house must be moved by mid-October when construction on the park begins, Halvorsen said.

In other action, the council:

  • Directed staff to discuss with the comprehensive plan consultant and the committee, if appropriate, the need to buy new property or new uses for existing town property. One property the town could consider buying is 7623 Summerfield Road. The council isn’t in the market to buy new property, but is directing staff to consider the town’s future needs and develop a plan, Halvorsen said.
  • Learned a grand opening for the second phase of the Summerfield Community Park will be from 2 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 29.
  • Learned a 5K run and a one-mile fun run/walk will be at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 19 at Summerfield Community Park. Proceeds will benefit the park’s programs and Camp Carefree.
  • Appointed Suzanne Hock to the parks and recreation committee.
  • Agreed to seek volunteers from the finance committee to serve on the ABC Board to replace Betsy Ingram, who doesn’t want to be reappointed.
  • Approved a fundraising policy, community-event approval policy and a risk assessment and internal control policy, contingent on approval by the finance committee. If approved, the policies will go into effect Sept. 1.
  • Approved a park facilities rental agreement, contingent on review of the last paragraph by the town attorney and the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department.
  • Approved a new planning and development fee schedule.
