A local Air Force sergeant recently participated in an 11-day joint military exercise to practice rapid-response skills.

Air Force Master Sgt. Shannon Smith was among soldiers with units from the Army, Air Force and Marine Corps who particpated in the exercise, called Hydra. The soldiers practiced skills such as air-dropping people and supplies and evacuating the injured during a simulated earthquake.

Smith, an aircraft maintenance supervisor with the 572nd Global Military Squadron at Travis Air Force Base in California, is the son of William Smith of Reidsville. He is a 1995 graduate of Reidsville High School.

“The exercise very accurately simulated what we are required to do in real world adverse situations,” Smith said. “It was good practice for when there is a crisis we need to respond to.”
