WINSTON-SALEM — A 36-year-old inmate has been charged in a homicide that happened 19 years ago.

Winston-Salem police said Michael Dwayne Miller has been charged with first-degree murder in the 1990 death of Thressa Nicholson, 74. Nicholson was strangled at 408 Lakeview Blvd. on Aug. 4, 1990. Police found no suspects and eventually transferred the case to the department's cold case unit.

Police said DNA evidence led them to Miller, who had been held at the Dan River Work Farm on a September 2008 conviction on misdemeanor larceny charges that were unrelated to the homicide.

The N.C. Department of Correction Web site shows that Miller has served time for various crimes, including larceny, drug possession, burglary and breaking and entering, dating to 1992.

He was arrested Thursday and is being held in the Forsyth County jail without bond.
