WINSTON-SALEM — A B-17 "Flying Fortress" bomber will fly over Winston-Salem later this month.
The public can ride on the bomber Aug. 22-23 at Smith-Reynolds Airport. Flights take about 45 minutes and cost $395 for members of the www.libertyfoundation.org, the nonprofit that owns the airplane, and $430 for nonmembers.
Participants can move around inside the plane during its flight. For those who want to watch from the ground, there will be a designated area at the airport to see takeoffs and landings.
This plane, the Liberty Belle, was built toward the end of World War II and never saw any combat. It was sold for scrap in 1947, but it was later used as a test plane. It was damaged in a tornado in 1979. Restoration began in 1992, and the plane took to the skies again in 2004.
