GREENSBORO — The sister of a Caswell County man who was killed and left floating in Hyco Lake in eastern Caswell County is turning to Triad residents for help in finding out what happened to her brother.
Robert Allen Michalec, 47, of Leasburg, was last seen about 9:30 p.m. June 25 after returning from a fishing trip on Hyco Lake, according to his sister Donna Mosley.
Mosley and another sibling found Michalec floating in the water the next day about 1:30 p.m.
A cooler he had taken with him fishing and his hat were found at different locations, she said.
A preliminary autopsy determined Michalec died from blunt force trauma to the head, according to the Caswell County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators have ruled that the death was not an accident.
Mosley said her brother was dropped off at his home on Lake Shore Road by two men who were subcontractors for the construction business where Michalec worked, Trout & Riggs Construction in Durham.
“They dropped him off at the dock at the home, shined a boat light and saw him walk toward his house,” Mosley said.
“The next day we found his body, his hat and his cooler in the lake.”
Mosley said that after talking to several neighbors in Michalec’s neighborhood in recent weeks, she found that many of them didn’t know her brother had been killed and thought his death was a drowning.
She said many of the homes around Hyco Lake are owned by people living in Greensboro and Burlington, and she hopes someone may have clues to determine how her brother died.
“A lot of the people live in Greensboro; they don’t necessarily live in Caswell County,” Mosley said.
“They live all over. They may have heard or seen something that evening and could give some information to help solve this case.”
Anyone with information about Michalec’s death is urged to call the Caswell County Sheriff’s Office at 694-9311 or Crime Stoppers at 694-5199.
Callers remain anonymous and are eligible for cash rewards.
