GREENSBORO — Daimler Buses North America announced Friday it has received an order from King County Metro Transit in Seattle for up to 500 hybrid buses, one of the largest orders in the company’s history.

Although the company declined to put a price tag on the five-year deal, a release from Metro Transit said the initial purchase of 93 buses would cost $45.7 million.

Daimler Buses, a Greensboro-based company, also said it has options with Metro Transit to provide up to 200 more of the diesel-electric buses.

The first-year’s order will be delivered in mid-2010.

In addition, the company said that over the past two months it has taken other orders for 225 transit buses, 30 motor coaches and 15 shuttle buses.

With these latest orders, the company said it will have more than 2,900 vehicles in service or on order for transit authorities throughout the U.S. and Canada, making it the world’s largest hybrid provider.
