GREENSBORO — Police arrested one man Saturday and are looking for two others in connection with a fatal crash Monday that involved multiple vehicles and several people fleeing the scene.
Alton Valgene Womack Jr., 26, was charged with felony aiding and abetting hit and run, police said. He was placed in Guilford County Jail under a $25,000 bond.
Police also found a GMC Yukon sport-utility vehicle they say was used to flee the scene of the crash, which took place just before 3 a.m. Monday on U.S. 29.
Twenty-three-year-old Cherita Jones died after the Acura TSX she was a passenger in struck a bern and flipped several times at the former Bothwell Street exit.
At roughly the same time, a BMW sedan left the road and hit a concrete wall. Shortly afterward, a third vehicle stopped behind the Acura and pulled the driver, Shaquetta Johnson, from the wreckage, police say. Jones was left behind.
Police believe all three vehicles had been at a High Point Road sports bar shortly before the crash.
Warrants have been issued for two others in connection with the incident.
William Donzelle McKinney, 27, is being charged with felony hit and run, and Tony Phelps, 26, is charged with felony aiding and abetting hit and run.
The investigation is still continuing, and anyone with information is asked to contact the police department at 373-2222 or Crimestoppers at 373-1000.
