GREENSBORO — A N.C. A&T police officer was injured Friday night after chasing a car from the university to the intersection of North Elm Street and Cone Boulevard.
The injured officer, whose name was not available Saturday morning, was taken to Moses Cone Hospital with minor injuries. He was later released and is recovering at home, said Mable Scott, a spokeswoman for the school.
"We are very thankful," she said. "We wish him the best."
Dustin Miles, 25, was charged with resist, delay and obstruct, damage to property and three counts of assault on a law enforcement officer, according to Greensboro police.
The chase started around 8:19 p.m. near the intersection of Sullivan Street and Charles Drew Drive when a driver failed to stop at an A&T police officer’s command, who was directing traffic after an N.C. A&T band practice. The driver continued through the crowd, forcing students to dodge the car, which then sped away.
Scott credited the awareness of band members for avoiding further injuries.
"They are very disciplined and they work as one unit," she said. "People just moved to get out of the way."
Officers chased the suspect north and called Greensboro police to assist them.
The chase ended when the car stopped at the intersection of Elm Street and Cone Boulevard.
Miles, according to police, refused to exit his vehicle and then drove into two patrol cars, injuring the officer. He rammed the police vehicles several times in an effort to avoid a roadblock, police said.
Officers were forced to enter the vehicle to arrest the man.
Police ask those with information to call Crimestoppers at 373-1000.
