Wire briefs: Isner loses in semi to Ginepri 6-4, 6-3

Greensboro's John Isner lost to Robby Ginepri 6-4, 6-3 on Saturday in the semifinals at the Indianapolis Tennis Championships.

"I always expect to do pretty well, but I'm definitely happy with this result," Isner said. "This is a good building block for the rest of my summer."

Ginepri will face Sam Querrey in today's final. Querrey earned his first berth to the Indianapolis finals, beating Frank Dancevic of Canada 6-4, 6-4.

Ginepri won ATP titles at Indianapolis in 2005 and Newport in 2003. The unseeded Ginepri is ranked 95th.

DAVYDENKO IN FINAL: Second-seeded Nikolay Davydenko came from behind in both sets to beat David Ferrer 7-5, 7-6 (2) and set up a German Open final against Paul-Henri Mathieu.

SAFINA CRUISES: Top-ranked Dinara Safina has reached her seventh final of the year by beating Alberta Brianti 6-4, 6-3 at the Slovenia Open. Safina will play defending champion Sara Errani.

AUTO RACING

MASSA IN STABLE CONDITION: Ferrari driver Felipe Massa underwent surgery on life-threatening skull injuries from a high-speed crash during Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying. He was in stable condition in the intensive care unit of a military hospital. The accident happened when a loose part from another car hit Massa in the helmet, causing him to veer into a tire-lined barrier at about 120 mph. The front of his car was shredded, with both tires gone and the front nose open.

ANDERSON IN COUNTDOWN: Greg Anderson raced to the No. 1 qualifying position in Pro Stock at the FRAM-Autolite NHRA Nationals in Sonoma, Calif., with a track-record performance of 6.571 seconds at 210.11 mph in a Pontiac GXP. With the qualifying effort, Anderson became the fourth driver in his category to secure a position in the Countdown to 1, NHRA's playoffs.
