GREENSBORO — A man was arrested early Thursday in a shooting death on Caldwell Street, and a woman is charged with hiding him and punching an officer, police said.
Edward Sherron Carter Jr., 21, of 911 Caldwell St. was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Markis Corey Bennerman, 26, just after midnight Thursday.
Police were called to the home on a robbery report. A woman called 911 and said she was at a friend’s house when a man pulled a gun, according to a recording of the call obtained through Guilford Metro 911.
The woman reported hearing gunshots as she ran to another house.
Officers arrived at 911 Caldwell St. and found Bennerman dead.
Capt. Janice Rogers said the killing happened after a prearranged meeting between Carter and Bennerman that turned into a robbery.
“There is a whole lot in between there,” Rogers said, “but the victim of the robbery was charged with first-degree murder.”
Rogers declined to discuss details of the crime. She could not say how the two men knew each other but said they were known to talk frequently on the phone.
She said Bennerman was shot several times.
Detectives also arrested Adrienne Devon McMasters, 34, of 909 Caldwell St. on charges of accessory after the fact.
Arrest warrants said that McMasters helped Carter after the shooting by allowing him to hide in her home with a handgun. Warrants also say McMasters gave Carter gloves to move Bennerman’s body.
McMasters was also charged with assault on a government official; warrants said she punched an officer.
McMasters is being held on a $250,000 bond; Carter is being held without bond. Both are at the Guilford County jail in Greensboro.
“B” Akins, president of the Ole Asheboro Neighborhood Association, said the area has had numerous problems with street corner drug sales, and it is a known corridor for prostitution.
“We have to find more for people in the community to do other than stand on the corner and sell drugs,” Akins said, noting she has been working with surrounding neighborhoods on addressing the problems.
“They don’t have any transportation or jobs or community center in our neighborhood. They are impatient and bored — standing on the corner, (problems) breed. We have a lot of work to do.”
