Colt League baseball players earn nine college scholarships

Nine former Colt League baseball players have been named winners of William J. White Scholarships.

This year's winners are: Glen Clemmons, Northwest Guilford, N.C. State; David Coffey, Ragsdale, North Carolina; Nathan Cook, Northwest Guilford, N.C. State; Gabe Dimock, Grimsley, Appalachian State; Trey Gilmore, Southeast Guilford, N.C. State; RobertKnight, Southern Guilford, N. C. State; Ethan Ogburn, Southwest Guilford, N.C. State; Ethan Payne, Northeast Guilford, Greensboro College; Mick Raynor, Eastern Guilford, Rockingham Community College.

The scholarships will be presented Wednesday at the Colt East Zone Tournament at Memorial Stadium in Greensboro.

The William J. White Scholarship Fund was established in 1980 following the death of Colt League pioneer Bill White.

Tax deductible donations to the William J. White Scholarship Fund may be sent to: Tim Nethery, P.O. Box 9591, Greensboro, N.C. 27429.

GOLF

CGA: Larry Boswell of Jamestown shot rounds of 66 and 71 at RiverTowne Club in Mount Pleasant, S.C., to finish at 7-under par and win the Super Senior Championship by three shots over John DeLuise of Raleigh.

The victory in the 72-player field is Boswell's 12th CGA title. The tournament was open to players 65 and older.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

DUKE: Backup running back Tony Jackson has been dismissed from the team. Blue Devils coach David Cutcliffe said Wednesday that Jackson was kicked off the team for failing to uphold the team's standard of conduct.

Jackson was listed on the preseason depth chart as the third-string running back behind Re'quan Boyette and Jay Hollingsworth. Jackson started three games as a sophomore in 2008, rushing for 259 yards on 76 carries. He also had 12 receptions for 106 yards and a touchdown.

GUILFORD: The Quakers have added six more recruits for next season: WR Scotty Gettys (Bessemer City), RB James Harris (Pikeville), OL/DL Roy Marsh (Zebulon), RB Christian Neikens (Fuquay-Varina), WR/DB D.J. Redmond (Raleigh), RB Earl Womble (Siler City).

VOLLEYBALL

GREENSBORO: The Pride has added five recruits: Brittany Hunsucker (Ragsdale/GTCC), Devin Harris (Kittrell), Laura Borawski (La Plate, Md.), Marcella Cranford (Randleman) and Hailey Phillips (Sanford).
