East-West girls soccer: East takes easy win

GREENSBORO — There was little doubt Carrie Dail earned MVP honors in Tuesday night's N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star Game. The All-State midfielder from Swansboro had a goal and an assist as the East won 3-1.

Conveying Dail's accomplishment to the crowd was another issue. With 10 minutes left, the power went out at UNCG Soccer Stadium, killing the lights, scoreboard and public address system. The game carried on in the declining light, but one tournament official radioed another with a prickly question.

"How're we gonna announce the MVP?"

Seconds later, a reply.

"Who yells the loudest?"

And so it was that Herk DeGraw, Grimsley girls soccer head coach and soccer liasion for the East-West week, stood at midfield with his arm around Dail and shouted as best he could that she would be adding another piece to her crowded trophy case.

Western Guilford's Lindsey Nusdeo, the News & Record All-Area Player of the Year, scored the West's lone goal in the 60th minute on a header off a corner kick from Grimsley's Bess Goodman. The two are teammates on the Greensboro Twisters club team.

The corner found Nusdeo just inside the far post, the same spot from which she buried a header to beat Northeast Guilford in the state semifinals. Rams head coach Jim Pielow, who led the West squad Tuesday, had that flashback right away.

"Over the years, she's beaten several teams with goals in the air," he said. "That was a big reason why I picked her for this team."

Megan Brigman of Laurinburg Scotland and Alyssa Bearden of Cary Panther Creek also scored for the East, which won for just the second time in six years.

The West got good second-half chances from Callie Simpkins of Northwest Cabarrus and Ashley Adler of Page, and they had a chance to tie it shortly after Nusdeo's goal when a free kick from just outside the box by Goodman rolled barely wide.

The East iced it with just over 10 minutes remaining when Barkley Minton of Raleigh Broughton sent a free kick toward Bearden, who headed it in through traffic for the final score. The East, drawing heavily from Jacksonville and Raleigh, had all but three of its players on the All-State team.

"Looking at the roster, we knew it was going to be a game," Nusdeo said. "It was pretty tough, but we put up a fight."
