Greensboro's John Isner defeated Josselin Ouanna of France 6-1, 7-6 (6) on Monday in the first round of the Indianapolis Tennis Championships.
He faces No. 8 seeded Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan in a second-round match that had not be scheduled as of Monday night.

CANES MAKE DEALS: The Carolina Hurricanes have agreed to one-year deals with defensemen Brett Carson and Bryan Rodney. Carson will earn $522,500 on the NHL level and $50,000 on the American Hockey League level, while Rodney will make $550,000 in the NHL and $55,000 in the AHL. Team vice president and assistant general manager Jason Karmanos said both players will have a chance to compete for a roster spot this fall.
The 23-year-old Carson played in five games with the Hurricanes and ranked second among defensemen with 35 points in Albany, Carolina's AHL affiliate. The 25-year-old Rodney played in eight games with Carolina last year and led Albany's defensemen with 36 points.

MAYFIELD WANTS INJUNCTION: Attorneys for Jeremy Mayfield on Monday said a federal judge correctly granted an injunction that lifted the drivers' indefinite suspension for failing a random drug test. In a motion filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Charlotte, N.C., Mayfield's lawyers contended Judge Graham Mullen properly ruled when he granted a July 1 injunction. The filing is a response to NASCAR's request that Mullen's order be put on hold as the decision is appealed to the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va.

PARKHURST RETURNS: Defender Michael Parkhurst, a Wake Forest alum, will the U.S. roster for Thursday's semifinal against Honduras in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. He played in three first-round matches, then returned to Denmark to be with Nordsjaelland and missed Saturday's quarterfinal win over Panama.
