GREENSBORO — Police continued to work late Monday to confirm the identity of a man shot to death earlier in the day outside a downtown club.
Emergency officials found the man lying in the parking lot at Club Rain, 219 W. Lewis St., police Capt. Janice Rogers said. EMS workers performed CPR on the man on the way to Moses Cone Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police arrived at the club at 4:17 a.m. after a report that a man had been shot multiple times.
Police had not confirmed the name of the victim or released a motive as of late Monday afternoon. The man was in his early 30s.
“There was a private party at the club that let out around that time and the victim was shot (multiple times),” Rogers said. “After he was shot, he was able to travel a short distance on foot before he collapsed.”
Police said they did not yet have solid leads on the shooter.
Rogers said witnesses described a dark sedan leaving soon after the shooting. The car’s model, year and number of occupants are unknown.
Forensic specialists placed more than 15 markers next to shell casings and other evidence Monday morning. The markers sat in front of two entrances to the club, and a red baseball cap was recovered on the side of the building where the victim collapsed.
Club owner Montis Lash said about 10 people, mostly staff members, had the doors locked and were playing cards and shooting pool.
The shooting was not related to the club, Lash said.
“I was coming out the door to go home and saw (cars) pulling out and the (victim) was on the side of my building,” he said.
Police have been called to the club 94 times since June 2008, when it was known as Club Remix, according to police statistics.
The business changed names and ownership in late July 2008.
Thirty calls were attributed to Club Remix and 64 came after it became Club Rain, statistics show.
Of those calls, two involved a shooting or stabbing. A man was shot in the hand there on May 30 and another man was stabbed in the abdomen on June 27.
There have also been nine calls for discharge of a firearm at the club during that time.
Lash said he has had a temporary alcohol license for the club since he took over last summer.
He said he isn’t sure why a permanent license has not been issued.
This is the city’s ninth homicide of 2009 and the second homicide police have investigated outside a nightclub this year.
