United Way of Greater High Point is hosting its fifth annual “Gifts for Homeless Kids” toy drive through Aug. 7 to benefit children in the community.
Cash donations and toys will be accepted at the United Way office, 201 Church Ave., through Aug. 7. Donations may include new toys, games, books, sports equipment and small electronics.
Other collection sites for toys are Belk and JCPenny stores at Oak Hollow Mall.
Volunteers will be needed to wrap gifts the week prior to United Way’s annual party, where gifts will be distributed.
Volunteers will also be needed to serve food and assist with activities at the distribution party, tentatively scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Aug. 18 at the High Point Fire Station, 1309 Chestnut Drive.
“This project is now in its fifth year, and we are hopeful our community will step forward to support these young people as it has in the past,” said Bobby Smith, president of the United Way of Greater High Point. “Thanks to the great work of agencies like the Salvation Army, Youth Unlimited and Family Service of the Piedmont, the physical needs of these kids are being met, and that is wonderful.”
Smith said the event’s goal is to remember the children with a special gift at a time other than the holidays.
