Stokesdale Good Samaritans , a non-profit group made up of 10 Stokesdale churches, completes a variety of projects throughout the year to help those in need in the community.
The group provides a food pantry the last Tuesday of each month at Stokesdale Business Park , members participate in the Crop Walk, and they help pay power and fuel bills and rent.
“It breaks your heart to have a mother come to you crying because she doesn’t have enough food to feed her children,” said Vicky Stephens , a volunteer with the group. “We’re seeing so many more in need with the economy in bad shape.”
In an effort to offer more assistance, Stokesdale Good Samaritans will hold a Community Health Day from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 15 at Stokesdale Business Park.
Free tooth extractions and dental work, as well as free mammograms, will be offered to the first 24 who register.
The deadline to register is July 28 . Mammograms are available to any woman 35 years or older without health insurance.
In addition, the Guilford County Health Department will have educational booths, a local chiropractor will be on hand, and a nurse practitioner will provide free blood pressure, sugar and other health screenings.
The Stokesdale Fire Department will pass out free smoke detectors and offer safety information, and area churches are putting together bags of school supplies to give children. There will also be free popcorn and bottled water.
“Anyone in need should come,” Stephens said. “So many don’t have dental or health insurance and have never had their blood pressure checked; we’re just trying to be good Samaritans.”
