Area briefs: Four QBs from N.C. nominated for award

Four quarterbacks from North Carolina universities have been nominated for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. The award is presented annually to college football's top senior quarterback. Wake Forest's Riley Skinner, Appalachian State's Armanti Edwards, Duke's Thaddeus Lewis and East Carolina's Patrick Pinkney have been named to the 21-player list. Edwards is the lone FCS (formerly Division I-AA) representative.

 

The nominees are: Jarrett Brown (West Virginia), Daryll Clark (Penn State), Armanti Edwards (Appalachian State), Max Hall (BYU), Tim Hiller (Western Michigan), Mike Kafka (Northwestern), Dan LeFevour (Central Michigan), Thaddeus Lewis (Duke), Corey Leonard (Arkansas State), Colt McCoy (Texas), Tony Pike (Cincinnati), Patrick Pinkney (East Carolina), Todd Reesing (Kansas), Zac Robinson (Oklahoma State), Tyler Sheehan (Bowling Green), Riley Skinner (Wake Forest), Rusty Smith (Florida Atlantic), Tim Tebow (Florida), Chris Turner (Maryland), Joe Webb (UAB) and Juice Williams (Illinois).

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

ELON: Elon will hold its annual Football 101 Women's Clinic on Saturday at Rhodes Stadium at 4-8 p.m. The cost is $30 per person. For information contact Sarah Thomas at 278-6063.

BASEBALL

HITOMS: Four members of the HiToms have been selected to participate in the Coastal Plain League all-star event. Outfielders Josh Liles (Tennessee), Chris Epps (Clemson) and Stewart Ijames (Louisville), as well as, right-handed relief pitcher Spencer Matthews (LSU) will represent the HiToms. The game is Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Wilmington.

YOUTH BASKETBALL

NC GATERS 28, NEW ORLEANS 22: The North Carolina Gaters 10 & Under team defeated the New Orleans Revolution 28-22 in the final game of pool play at the AAU Nationals in Lexington, Ky. The Gaters were led by Kameron Langley's eight points and four assists. The Gaters finished 1-2 in pool play and will begin bracket play in the Classic Championship today against the Miramar (Fla.) Patriots.

GOLF

NORTH & SOUTH WOMEN'S AM: Jamestown's Sydney Crane lost to Rockwell's Cydney Clanton 4 & 2 in the third round of the North & South Women's Amateur at Pinehurst No. 2. Earlier in the day, Crane defeated Eleana Collins of Pinehurst, 1 up. Results are in Scoreboard, B5.

UNCG: UNCG incoming freshman Robert Hoadley lost in the opening round of the match play phase at the USGA's Amateur Public Links championship on Wednesday. Hoadley lost to Sean Maekawa 4 and 3.
