We asked EMF students and faculty: What do you have on your mp3 player?
Since I'm Indian, I have a lot of Bollywood-type music on there. But, I also love classical, and I've been listening to some Shostakovich. I also have some rap on there, some Lil' Wayne and also a new group called RATATAT.
-- Indu Ramesh, 17, violin
Raleigh
Right now, I have a lot of classical music. I have a bunch of Bach and Schoenberg. I've got everything from classical, baroque, sonata form of music, all the way to free form and no rules whatsoever. I've got a little bit of modern, what everyone else listens to, like Radiohead, Muse, Sufjan Stevens. I play violin, so I've got a lot of violin in there, too. I make recordings for auditions sometimes, and they end up on my iPod. If any one of my family members wants to hear me play, I can just pull out an mp3.
-- Sarah Land, 17, violin
Columbia S.C.
I always have some Bach. Not too much pop stuff. Mainly some jazz, like John Coltrane, and also classical.
I probably have an unusual number of film scores. Right now I'm listening to Thomas Newman, "Road to Perdition."
-- Lee Hipp, tuba
faculty orchestra
I listen to music that I have to study for performance -- most of the time Mozart and Bach. And for relaxation, I love to listen to jazz. I have a lot of jazz on my iPod. Wynton Marsalis, Charlie Parker, Chick Corea. Those are things I grew up with. My dad was a jazz connosieur. So it's like comfort food. And I also have a little bit of R&B, like Earth Wind and Fire. I have four children, so I hear enough pop at home. My iPod is very personalized for my tastes.
-- Diane Phoenix-Neal, viola
faculty orchestra
I used to have music no later than the 1950s, because I thought all music after that was lame. But finally, I branched out a little bit. (I) started listening to modern composers like (Krzysztof) Penderecki and John Adams. Now, it's not quite as isolated. I also have some Schoenberg and some Philip Glass. Except for the Beatles, the Doors and Simon and Garfunkel, I don't really have much (pop music). I usually like listening to Beethoven, sometimes Mozart, but mostly Tchaikovsky.
-- Matthew Brvenik, 21, double bass
Storrs, Conn.
Mostly hip-hop: Mario, Bow Wow, T-Pain. I'm also listening to some Michael Jackson right now. I really like "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough." But, I also have some classical on there, like Beethoven and Mozart.
-- Kristin Jones, 14, violin
Gaithersburg, Md.
Pretty much anyone you can think of. I have everything. I have music from all periods, from baroque to contemporary. There are no holes. That's one of the great things about the iPod, you can fit so much music into such a small device. I listen to pieces that I want to do in the future. I've been listening to (Witold) Lutoslawski. I've been listening to Bartok. I've been listening to some contemporary composers who are writing new music like (Peter) Lieberson, (John) Corigliano, John Harbison.
-- Jose-Luis Novo, conductor
faculty orchestra
It's a pretty eclectic mix. I use it as a study guide, so a lot of the things that I have to play are on there. I use it to play along with pieces with the earbuds that fit really well.
I also have Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, Buddy Rich, The Police, Smashing Pumpkins. Really, everything from Stravinsky to Tito Puente. I even have some Zimbabwean mbira (a wooden xylophone like instrument) music on there.
-- Eric Schweikert, principal percussion
faculty orchestra
It depends. I like listening to something new. I have the new Steve Martin banjo CD on there. It's really good. I also have Dolly Parton and Kenny Drew Jr., who's a jazz pianist. And also Yolanda Kondonassis, who plays harp.
-- Anne Kate Mackle, harp
faculty orchestra
I've got a lot of different stuff on there -- a ton of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. I've got some Flight of the Conchords. I also have a lot of classical music any time I'm working on something. Right now, I have Mahler. And also some comedy albums, Jim Gaffigan and Dane Cook.
-- John Shaw, percussion
faculty orchestra
I guess I get enough music during the day. I listen to a lot of podcasts, a lot of stuff from NPR. Also "This American Life." But I also have some David Oistrakh and a Sibelius violin concerto. And some Death Cab for Cutie, also.
-- Anne Donaldson, violin
faculty orchestra
I have mostly classical music, Rimsky-Korsakov, Stravinsky, Berlioz. But, I also have some Elvis on there, some Billy Joel. I have a lot of different classic rock artists.
-- Stephen Houck, 19, trombonist
McLean, Va.
Mostly classical music, what we're playing here at the festival. Mostly Mozart, Beethoven, Rosetti. I usually like to listen to acoustic guitar, also. When I want to listen to something other than classical, maybe an artist such as Jack Johnson or Jeff Wahl. I really love the music that features the horn as a solo instrument, so I'm trying to familiarize myself with that repertoire as much I can. One artist I really like Hermann Baumann.
