Three arrested after multiple Davidson break-ins

LEXINGTON — Three men have been charged in a string of break-ins in Davidson County that date back to February.

The Davidson County Sheriff's Office said trucks, tools, firearms and equipment were reported stolen. Most of the break-ins took place in early July, and they occurred mainly at homes and businesses in the Silver Valley community. Deputies have recovered much of what was reported stolen.

The sheriff's office said the arrests stem from these cases:

* On Feb. 22, tools belonging to Century Contractors and their employees were stolen from a PPG Industries plant. A 1994 Ford F-250 pickup truck also was stolen but was recovered about three hours later at N.C. 49 and N.C. 8. The tools were valued at $17,000. Some $2,000 worth of the tools were recovered in April from a home on Wright Road in Davidson County. A rear gate at the plant was damaged when the suspects escaped.

* On March 19, a flatbed utility trailer worth $1,800 was stolen from 2966 U.S. 64 West in the Reeds community. It was recovered July 10.

* On June 8, someone stole three shotguns worth $2,200 from a home at 1953 Hill Road in the Silver Valley community. The same home was broken into again July 2. Taken were 13 firearms worth $3,625. Four of those firearms were recovered July 8.

* On June 30, a portable cement mixer valued at $400 was stolen from an outbuilding at 138 Sweetbriar Road in the Silver Valley area. It was recovered July 8.

* On July 3, two jet skis and a trailer were stolen from a business at N.C. 49 and N.C. 8 in Denton. Deputies recovered The stolen property, worth $9,000, two days later in a wooded area on Rocky Lane in the Silver Valley area.

* Also on July 3, a 1985 Chevrolet conversion van worth $1,500 was stolen from BK Auto Sales at 8630 U.S. 64 East. Deputies found it on July 8.

* On July 4, an outbuilding at 7533 U.S. 64 East was broken into. A dirt bike and all-terrain vehicle valued at $8,000 were stolen. Deputies recovered the all-terrain vehicle four days later.

* On July 6, a GMC 1500 truck was stolen from 501 Old N.C. 75 in the Silver Valley community. The truck, valued at $8,500, was recovered July 8.

The three men charged were:

* Robert Gray Rhodes, 20, of 465 Larry Lane in Lexington. His charges are three counts each of felony breaking and entering and felony larceny after breaking and entering, two counts of felony larceny of firearms and one count of felony possession of stolen property. Rhodes was arrested last Wednesday as deputies searched his home. The sheriff's office said his charges stem from the break-ins on N.C. 49, N.C. 8, Hill Road and 7533 U.S. 64 East. Bond was set at $100,000.

* Shannon Elwood Cody, 34, of 1656 Chapelwood Road in Denton. His charges are one count each of felony breaking and entering, felony larceny after breaking and entering, felony larceny of a motor vehicle and misdemeanor injury to real property. Cody was arrested Thursday at his home. His charges stem from the break-in at PPG Industries. His bond is $20,000.

* Don Odell Kinley Jr., 23, of 1136 Fred Miller Road in Lexington. His charges are four counts of felony breaking and entering, two counts of felony larceny of firearms, three counts of felony larceny after breaking and entering and one count of misdemeanor injury to real property. Kinley turned himself in to the sheriff's office Tuesday. Bond was set at $50,000.

The sheriff's office said it has recovered about $10,000 worth of property stolen from Forsyth County. No charges have yet been filed in connection with these items.
