RALEIGH (AP) — Trustees at N.C. State have created a panel to investigate the scandal over a controversial job given to a former governor's wife.

The new panel will try to figure out whether policies should be changed, The News & Observer of Raleigh reported today.

Former first lady Mary Easley was terminated from the $170,000-a-year job she held at the school after the former board chairman, the chancellor and provost left their posts.

Trustees, in a Tuesday meeting, also named a search committee to find a new chancellor. Interim Chancellor Jim Woodward is the retired head of UNC Charlotte.

S. Lawrence Davenport, the new board chairman, proposed the committee.

"We've got too much going on here and too much at stake to be as laid back as we have in the past," Davenport said after the meeting. "We're going to look back and see what went wrong and we're going to try to, no we are going to fix it."

Davenport appointed five trustees to the panel, including three new appointees.

"They didn't have a dog in that fight, so they can be objective and lay it on the line," he said.
